Which joke is your favourite?

Do you have a good joke for kids?

Fiddleheads!

Hi Grade 2,

When I was shopping on the weekend I found a New Brunswick spring delicacy - fiddleheads!

I looked up fiddleheads and found some background information on Wikipedia. Check out some of the recipes I found for Fiddleheads on the Tourism New Brunswick website.

We are going to cook and eat the fiddlehards this morning to experience this New Brunswick delicacy!

Here is how to safely cook fiddleheads:

Cleaning fresh fiddleheads

  • Remove as much of the brown papery husk as possible, using your fingers.
  • Wash the fiddleheads in several changes of fresh cold water to remove any residual husk or dirt.

Cooking fiddleheads

Before eating fiddleheads, make sure to follow these steps:
  • Cook them in a generous amount of boiling water for 15 minutes or steam them for 10 to 12 minutes. Discard water used for boiling or steaming fiddleheads.
  • Follow these instructions before sautéing, frying, baking or making other foods(e.g. soups, casseroles) using fiddleheads.

Our Class Recipe

     1. Clean the fiddleheads well in cold water.

     2. Boil the fiddleheads for 12-15 minutes.

     3. Saute the fiddledheads in a frying pan with butter and garlic.

     4. Enjoy!

What did you think of the fiddleheads? How was the:

- smell?

- flavour?

- texture?

- visual appeal?

Please leave me your tasting notes!

Cheers,
Mrs. F.

Writing Workshop with Tyler Enfield

We had a great Writer's Workshop with Tyler Enfield last week. Mr. Enfield taught us the 2 things you need to create a story:

Structure and Creative Juices!

Mr. Enfield showed us the 5 parts that  make up the structure of stories. Every story has these 5 parts:

Characters are why we care! (characters)

Tyler showed us how to write a 5 sentence story using the 5 parts of stories. Here is our class 5 sentence story we wrote with him.

We were all very engaged in our writing!

Mr. Enfield also talked to us about some "anti rules" for writing  to help us boost our creativity.

Tyler asked us how it felt to "break the rules" and write creatively. Random writing can be a great way to love writing. He reminded us that sometimes random writing can turn into something bigger or sometimes it ends up in recycle!  The important thing is to write and to LOVE IT!

Check out some of our 5 sentence stories we have been working on.
